Our Bread

Delicious!

The milling method makes an astoundingly sticky dough, but the bread is good.

I'd suggest a bread machine to avoid the time it took me to get this off my hands!

Liz's Wheat

Another family has forwarded me their photos.

Thank you Liz for getting involved and I hope your bread is delicious!

Milling...

There was a general feeling this year that we didn't want to grind our wheat by hand! In the absence of a grain mill I had a little search online and found this: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/saving/msg1222075825961.html

So we have put our wheat (200g) in a bowl with the water (200g) required by our recipe. We're leaving it to soak overnight and tomorrow we will whizz it into a soft dough with the food processor, before adding the extra flour (we're going to do half our own wheat and half white bread flour) and sourdough starter and kneading...

Threshing and Winnowing

We've been working hard today separating the wheat from stalks and chaff- taking advantage of a bright and breezy day!

Harvest!

Harvest time. Jack and Charlie have been waiting for a little dry weather so we were out in the cold and wind this afternoon to cut and bundle up the wheat to dry! All the boys worked hard to bring our little harvest in!

Snails

They like to hide in the wheat and come out to nibble our peas!

This photo is of us searching them out, look how tall our little shoots have grown!

The heads on the wheat are turning golden, despite all the rain!
